Considering Your Property’s Next Chapter? Let’s Start the Conversation.

Housing solutions on Nantucket don’t always begin with a shovel in the ground. Sometimes, they begin with a conversation.

Since 1994, Housing Nantucket has worked alongside property owners, community partners, and local leaders to create and preserve year-round housing opportunities for the people who keep Nantucket running. From affordable rentals and homeownership opportunities to deed-restricted homes and house recycling, our work has always been rooted in one goal: helping year-round residents continue to call Nantucket home.

Today, that mission is more important than ever.

With Nantucket’s median home price now exceeding $3.5 million, housing has become one of the greatest challenges facing our island’s workforce. Teachers, healthcare professionals, tradespeople, nonprofit employees, hospitality workers, and first responders all play an essential role in our community, yet many are finding it increasingly difficult to afford to live here.

Creating more housing will require new construction, but it will also require new ideas.

Every Property Has Potential

Not every housing solution starts with vacant land or a large development site. Existing homes, cottages, secondary or tertiary dwellings, underutilized buildings, and even properties that may no longer fit a family’s long-term plans can all become part of the solution.

Housing Nantucket is actively seeking opportunities to partner with property owners who are considering:

  • Selling a home or parcel of land
  • Donating property
  • Relocating an existing home
  • Redeveloping an underutilized property
  • Exploring creative housing partnerships

Every property is different, and every conversation is confidential. Our team works closely with owners to understand their goals while exploring opportunities that create a lasting community benefit.

Thinking Beyond Traditional Conservation

For generations, Nantucket property owners have made extraordinary gifts of land to preserve the island’s natural beauty. Those gifts have shaped the Nantucket we know today.

As the housing crisis continues to grow, there is another opportunity to leave a lasting legacy: helping preserve the island’s year-round community.

For some property owners, that may mean donating land or a home. For others, it could mean selling a property for affordable housing, creating a redevelopment partnership, or simply exploring options they hadn’t previously considered.

In certain situations, these approaches may also provide meaningful tax advantages while creating a lasting impact for future generations.

Building Solutions Together

Housing Nantucket continues to expand its work through property acquisition, development partnerships, house recycling, and thoughtful redevelopment. No single organization can solve Nantucket’s housing challenges alone, but collaboration between nonprofits, the Town, businesses, and individual property owners is creating new opportunities every year.

If you’ve been thinking about the future of your property, even if you’re just beginning to explore your options, we’d welcome the opportunity to talk.

Sometimes the first step toward creating housing is simply starting the conversation.
