Using what we have
When Robin Wiessman contacted us to see if we were interested in her 4-bedroom home for our House-Recycling Program, we just had to take a look. Robin and her husband Ken had outgrown the home and needed a bigger space to accommodate their expanding family. Although Housing Nantucket didn’t have vacant land on which to move the structure, we keep a list of “Buyers-in-the-Wings” who do. One of our fundraising initiatives involves selling donated property to a third-party, who is responsible for relocating the dwelling to their own land. A potential buyer had recently reached out to us. He owned land in the vacinity, and was looking for a second dwelling to move to the property. The stars aligned. On January 25, 2022, the building was moved to his land.
The sale of the structure raised much-needed funds for our Affordable Rental Homes. These homes are rented at below-market rates to year-round residents who meet income qualification requirements. Because the rents are below market, we need to raise funds outside of the rent-rolls in order to maintain the buildings at high standards. By keeping up with routine and capital maintenance needs, we perserve the island’s investment in affordable housing for generations to come.
